David Warburton Investigation - Green Party Selects Somerton and Frome Candidate Who Adds to Calls for Warburton To Resign

Vote Green - get Lib Dem?

The investigations have continued into suspended Tory MP for Somerton and Frome, David Warburton. Somerset Independents has still not received any responses to our questions to Warburton and the latest news, as reported by us, was that he was in psychiatric hospital again.

The Liberal Democrats have already selected their Parliamentary Candidate, Sarah Dyke, to replace David Warburton.

Liberal Democrats and Greens in the Mendip area have worked together before. In 2019 former Green group leader on Mendip District Council, Councillor Shane Collins, told the BBC's David Garmston after the local elections that there was collaboration between the Lib Dems and Greens.

Later that year, during the General Election, there was a big falling out between the former Lib Dem (Adam Boyden) and Green (Andrea Dexter) Parliamentary candidates, with neither wanting to stand aside for each other.

This week, Somerset Independents published a denial from the Independents for Frome political party that there was any agreement between them and the Greens.

Due to all this collaboration between the Lib Dems and Greens, and claims of collaboration by the Greens with IFF, it is somewhat of a surprise that the Green Party has selected a candidate for Parliament for the Somerton and Frome Constituency. Martin Dimery is his name.

Martin Dimery

In a statement, Dimery said:

"I am honoured and delighted to have been selected as the Green Party's Parliamentary Candidate for the Somerton and Frome Constituency.  I'm very grateful to all those Green Party members who voted for me as their candidate.

In the past seven years or so, support for the Green Party has grown considerably in the constituency, notably in Frome, where we now hold 4 of the 5 Somerset Council seats.

Green votes have also increased across this very large constituency, returning several district, town and parish councillors in recent elections. The Green Party is offering a new, dynamic and positive approach, at a time when many are disillusioned and dismissive of conventional party politics.

With an agenda to address climate change, the cost of living crisis and the challenges facing the economy, Green Party policies could not be more important or relevant.

I welcome the opportunity to campaign for the Somerton and Frome parliamentary seat and respectfully call for the current MP David Warburton, to acknowledge his circumstances and stand down to precipitate a by-election. We deserve full and committed representation.

Martin Dimery"

Somerset Independents Leader Andrew Pope says:

Andrew Pope

"Responding to the views of Somerset residents who want Warburton to go, Somerset Independents has been leading investigations into David Warburton here in Somerset. Not just recently, but going back to 2020 when I went to the Chief Whip.

We've been asking "Where's Warburton?" for months - you can see it on on our website. And I've been calling for David Warburton to resign for months. The weight of the investigations and his lack of representation of residents, meant that he should go. And he has confirmed that he still supported the disgraced Prime Minister Boris Johnson. We've published what Warburton has written to constituents.

After pressure from Somerset Independents, and relying on others to do the hard work for her, the Lib Dem candidate Sarah Dyke eventually joined my calls only a fortnight ago for Warburton to resign, as has Labour spokesperson Sean Dromgoole.

Now new Green candidate Martin Dimery has added the Greens call for Warburton to go.

The only Westminster Party that has not called for David Warburton to go is the Conservatives, who have suspended David Warburton. They've called him 'Independent'.

Somerset Independents has called out fake independents. Warburton is definitely a fake independent. He is a suspended Tory and he must go."
